May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States. Jewish Family Service LA has been shining a light on the importance of mental health care and dispelling the stigma that surrounds it.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, people in Los Angeles and around the country have experienced a secondary mental health pandemic. The silver lining is that the pandemic has brought the subject of mental health to the forefront where it can be recognized as a component of our overall health, just as important as our physical health. But access to mental health care and resources can be complicated and seem out of reach for many. Out of the one in five U.S. adults who experience a mental illness each year, less than half receive any kind of treatment.

JFS offers a variety of mental health services including Individual, Couples, and Group Counseling, Domestic Violence Counseling & Support, Pregnancy & Postpartum Support, Counseling and synagogue-based support tailored to the needs of the Jewish community, , and our newest program, the Homeless Prevention Program, which offers support and services for individuals at risk of becoming homeless due to hoarding.

JFS’s mental health services adhere to a “person-centered” approach tailored to their unique needs. Depending on the service, clients have the option of participating in services virtually, in their homes, at a client-designated safe space, or in one of our offices. For those struggling with depression, anxiety, abuse, trauma, substance use and addiction, relationship challenges, or other mental health challenges, JFS partners with clients to problem-solve and to help them realize their individual goals.

In the last year, our Mental Health Programs have provided much needed counseling to nearly 600 individuals throughout Los Angeles. Jewish Family Service LA is committed to helping the people of Los Angeles build healthier, more satisfying lives.
