JFS Care Partners with the Holocaust Museum LA to Provide Holocaust Education to Caregivers

Beginning in February, the Holocaust Museum LA will offer JFS Care’s caregiver staff a guided tour of the museum to help them learn more about the experiences of their clients who are survivors of the Holocaust and to help them understand how the trauma from their past impact who they are today.

JFS Care provides professional, private homecare and care management to aging adults in LA, including many survivors of the Holocaust, who need a wide variety of care such as assistance with meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care, and companionship. In a single week, JFS Care can serve up to 90 survivors.

“We have always felt it was important for our caregivers to better understand our clients, and with that understanding comes stronger bonds, and greater compassion ultimately leading to better care being provided,” said Steven Barlam, CEO of JFS Care. “We broached the concept with the Holocaust Museum LA, and they embraced the idea with open arms to help set up guided tours for our staff.”

The tour will be available to JFS Care staff through 2023 and will be offered in English and Spanish. “Our successful caregivers have found that getting to know their clients, understanding who they are, and how past events impact who they are today, makes such a huge difference,” said Steven. “It helps caregivers connect with clients and that is just so important.”

With support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, JFS Care will pay the caregivers for taking time out of their day to attend the guided museum tour. “Our goal is to get 100 working caregivers to attend the guided tour by the end of the year,” said Steven. “JFS Care is grateful to the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and the Holocaust Museum LA for allowing us this unique opportunity.”
