HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Visits JFS

On Thursday, August 26, Jewish Family Service was honored to host U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the JFS {Freda Mohr Multipurpose Center. Secretary Sebelius’ visit to Los Angeles was part of the Administration’s ongoing initiative to combat Medicare fraud.

In the morning, Secretary Sebelius joined U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder at a health care fraud prevention summit at Los Angeles City College.   Later in the afternoon, Secretary Sebelius continued her outreach on this critical issue by directly addressing some of Los Angeles’ senior citizens who are most directly impacted by Medicare fraud.

Secretary Sebelius chose to meet with a small group of seniors at JFS {Freda Mohr – an anchor in our community and a place that many older adults call “home” during the day.  Secretary Sebelius outlined the steps the Administration is taking to combat Medicare fraud by both updating its tracking systems and by enlisting a corps of volunteers to work directly in our communities. The Secretary then took questions from the LIFE, Eichenbaum and Freda Mohr program participants about Medicare coverage and the impact of federal health care reform.

Secretary Sebelius also took a quick tour of the facility and visited the JFS Eichenbaum Health Center, observing an aerobics class and continuing to speak directly with our seniors. While Secretary Sebelius’ visit on Thursday only lasted an hour, its impact on JFS and the lives of our clients will continue well into the future.
