Question: What do you get when you mix Passover in Los Angeles with 200 volunteers, 600 participants, 100 bottles of grape juice, 80 seder plates and 4 very famous questions?
Answer: More than just 1200 matzo-balls! The result of this holiday mix was the 31st Annual Clarence Gerber Memorial Passover Celebration coordinated by JFS and generously supported in full by members of the community. Most of us celebrate and remember our escape from slavery with family and friends. Sadly, there are thousands of people in our community who do not have this opportunity. In Los Angeles over 100,000 Jews live below the poverty line and for many of these individuals, especially the elderly and disabled, the reality of poverty includes loneliness and isolation during the holidays. The JFS Clarence Gerber Memorial Passover programs strives to address this need, by providing community seders and kosher for Passover home delivered meals to homebound older and disabled adults. Each year, hundreds of volunteers donate their time to help make this important community event a reality, and this year was no different. "The enthusiasm of our volunteers is truly contagious," said Sherri Kadovitz, Coordinator of Special Projects for JFS. "From synagogue youth group members, to business leaders, board members, families and beyond everyone is excited to lend a hand. One of my favorite parts about working with this group of volunteers, is that many of them have been volunteering with the JFS Passover program for years. Once you see the smiles on the faces of our participants, you're hooked! Volunteers come back year after year." Thank you to all of our donors, volunteers, staff members, participants and friends who helped make the 2010 JFS Clarence Gerber Memorial Passover program a success.
